CHISHOLM PARK, SCOTTISH CAIRNS GARDENS RECEIVE FEDERAL FUNDS

May 06, 2006 - Antigonish, Nova Scotia

Culture and commerce are set to receive a boost in downtown
Antigonish. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)
is investing $93,015 to assist in the historical
interpretation of significant buildings and sites, the
restoration of historic tree sculptures, and the
development of a walking trail master plan.

“Canada’s New Government recognizes the link between
cultural enhancement and commercial advancement, and this
investment will help to re-enforce that link in the
Antigonish business district,” said the Honourable Peter
MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of ACOA.

Enhancements to Chisholm Park will include the creation of
a walking path, period flower beds, and the installation of
benches, picnic tables and a water fountain. Park
improvements will support the presentation of summer
concerts catering to tourists and local residents on the
existing outdoor stage.

Additions to Scottish Cairns Commemorative Gardens will
include restoration of the tree sculptures, inter-locking
brick pathways, a natural stone retaining wall, and
historical markers. The transformation of the Gardens will
function as the beginning of a walking tour that will
connect various locations of heritage significance around
the town.

The project will also support development of a walking
trail master plan utilizing the Wrights River and Brierly
Brook waterways. The Town of Antigonish contributed $28,076
toward the project, which is expected to be completed in
the fall of 2007.

“Throughout this process, the business community has been
actively engaged to ensure the viability and success of the
end result,” said Mayor Kathleen Chisholm. “By enhancing
the attractiveness of our business district we strengthen
our tourism product, which in turn strengthens our business
community. It’s a win–win–win situation.”
