GOVERNMENT OF CANADA ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR TRULEAF

August 17, 2012 - Bible Hill, NS

Scott Armstrong, Member of Parliament for Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (ACOA) (La Francophonie) announced today support from the Government of Canada to a Truro-based company working to change how the world grows and accesses fresh produce.

“Our Government’s top priority is creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said MP Armstrong. “We are proud to support TrufLeaf as they continue their work to create sustainable agricultural technology and bring attention to the kind of innovations that are being commercialized here in Atlantic Canada.”

The Government of Canada, through ACOA, offers a repayable investment of $355,410 that will support TrufLeaf Sustainable Agriculture Limited, as they work to commercialize and market their new agri-food technology, Smart Plant Systems.

The Smart Plant System integrates existing greenhouse and hydroponic growing technologies to bring traditional farming to non-traditional locations. The system uses LED lighting, enabling clients to produce sustainable, nutritious, leafy plants year-round in scalable, on-site locations such as industrial parks, grocery stores, homes and office buildings. The process reduces water consumption and spoilage by more than 75% compared to traditional growing methods.

“We all need to rethink how we grow and buy our food,” said Gregg Curwin, President and CEO of TruLeaf. “When we look at the water shortages in the US right now and the rising cost of fuel, we can't rely on imported food as much as we do today. There is a huge appetite for innovations that redefine farms as we know them, and Nova Scotia has the potential to become a global leader in this space. We are incredibly excited about working to make year-round local food an alternative we don't have today."
