DELEGATION PROMOTES ATLANTIC CANADIAN SEAFOOD AT CHINA’S LARGEST SEAFOOD SHOW

November 05, 2013 - Moncton (NB)

A delegation of 26 companies and industry associations, including two Atlantic Canadian chefs, is in China to showcase the flavours of Atlantic Canada at the 2013 China Fisheries and Seafood Expo in Dalian, from November 5 to 7.

In Dalian, Atlantic Canadian companies will have the opportunity to network with Chinese buyers and industry professionals, and participate in site visits and business to business meetings. Chef Ted Grant, of the Nova Scotia Community College, and Chef Roger Andrews, of the College of the North Atlantic, will be on site to provide a taste of Atlantic Canadian lobster, crab, mussels, and shrimp to Chinese buyers and delegates.

Follow up activities to the mission include plans for an Atlantic Canadian guest chef to help develop a menu featuring Atlantic Canadian products at a new Canadian-themed restaurant in China this winter.

In 2012, Atlantic Canada exported $2.9 billion worth of seafood to world markets, and sales to Asia make up 23% of that number. Market development efforts have met with success so far – since 2011, sales to China have increased by 30% and sales to Asia, by 16% – and there are still significant opportunities to be explored by Atlantic Canadian companies.

China’s middle class grows by 40 million people each year, creating an increasing appetite for high-quality food. China’s seafood consumption is growing faster than its production levels, and the market is hungry for imported seafood. According to the event’s website, China Fisheries and Seafood Expo 2013 will feature even more national pavilions as seafood producers around the world respond to China’s growing demand for imported seafood, which is widely seen in China as a safe and high-quality choice.

Asia is the world’s largest and fastest growing seafood market. The China Fisheries and Seafood Expo, which is the largest seafood show in Asia and has been held annually for the past 17 years, saw over 17,000 visitors from 89 countries in 2012. China, the world’s second largest economy, is the most populous country in the world, with approximately 1.34 billion people. China also ranks fourth among the world’s largest importers.

The Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces invested over $116,000 in the Atlantic delegation’s attendance at the event through the Canada-Atlantic Provinces Agreement on International Business Development (IBDA). The IBDA is a federal/provincial agreement between the Government of Canada (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, and Industry Canada) and the four provincial governments in Atlantic Canada. It is designed to help Atlantic Canadian businesses enter, explore and succeed in international markets. The IBDA is a key component of a pan-Atlantic effort to foster business relations, attract foreign investment and nurture technological co-operation.
