Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018

Economic Development Initiative (EDI)

The Economic Development Initiative (EDI) supports the Government of Canada’s official languages strategy, The Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018, and its mandate to ensure the vitality of English and French in Canada by focusing on three key pillars: education, immigration and communities.

Through the EDI, ACOA will provide funding to help support, strengthen and diversify the economic base of Atlantic Canada’s Francophone communities, which are the official language minority community – or OLMC – in the region.

Who can apply?

Non-profit organizations such as:

  • Business and economic development associations (certificate of incorporation required)
  • Provincial Crown Corporations
  • Universities
  • Educational institutions
  • Municipalities and their agencies
  • Business or technology institutes

What qualifies for EDI funding?

  • Projects that provide a service to business such as: Entrepreneurship development, marketing, training or technology transfer;
  • Specialized services such as planning, business information, business counselling, testing services, research and development services;
  • Market and trade development.

How much assistance is available?

ACOA will be delivering $6.2 million in EDI funding to help support sustainable growth, business and economic development in Atlantic Canada’s Francophone communities.

What criteria must be met?

Projects will be selected on the basis of readiness, funds leveraged, and their potential contribution to the economic sustainability and development of the OLMCs. Successful projects must help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grow and become more competitive, while also diversifying the economic base of OLMCs. The project must have the capacity to be completed by March 31, 2018 and applicants are required to leverage a minimum of 25 per cent of funding from other sources.
